We’ve been having a heat wave here, and part of the A/C is out at home. So my human and I were happy to have a weather break a the big hospital, where it’s cool inside all year round.
Our first stop was the Cancer Center, and I visited with a very nice older woman. She took photos, told us a friend of hers had a Scottish fold and a Bengal, and was just very pleased to see me. I also visited with the nurse and jumped on her desk. My human always worries when I do that, but this desk wasn’t cluttered like hers is, so I didn’t knock anything over.
We paused on our way to Labor and delivery to visit with one of the nurses we almost always see on our visits. She’s fun and chatty, and she called over several hospital staff members to come see me.
There were some different nurses than usual at Labor and Delivery, along with the familiar ones. One we hadn’t seen before was super curious about me and he asked lots of questions about my therapy cat work.
I did have one patient up there…well, one official one. She also had most of her family there with her, and they were all cat people! So I had a lot of visiting to do. But mostly I snuggled up to the pregnant patient. Meanwhile, the girl who seemed to be her sister talked a lot with my human and FaceTimed me to people at home. We had a very cozy visit, and then I had to hurry to make it to Behavioral Medicine on time.
The staff at Behavioral Medicine really loves our visits. Usually I sit on a big table to visit with the patients. This time, they found a big cloth cover to stretch over the table so I’d be comfortable. That was so thoughtful! Today, they had three patients for me: one animal person, one guy who was scared of cats, and a woman who had never had a pet. The guy who said he was scared of cats was my favorite because I totally won him over! He petted me and remarked how amazed his friends and family would be to see him doing that.
On the way out, we stopped to visit with a cute Spanish speaking lady and her mother. The lady was so excited by me and she couldn’t resist picking me up and hugging me! You probably know I’m not that fond of being picked up like that. But because I’m a therapy cat I tolerate it. However, the mortified look on my face while I was being cuddled made my human laugh.
Then, before we signed out, another Spanish speaking family saw us. It was an elderly couple, a grandmother, a mother, and a grown daughter. They all wanted to see me. The daughter walked up and looked at me and said, “Oh, is this a healing cat?”
And she was right.
