Updated October 2026 • Halloween Dog Costume Ideas
Looking for a funny, adorable, or downright ridiculous Halloween costume for your dog? You’re in the right place!
Over the years, we’ve had a silly amount of fun dressing up our dachshund Django for Halloween. He’s been a ghost, a Beanie Baby, a ‘Harry Paw-ter’ wizard, and more. Some costumes were surprisingly easy to pull together. Others required a little creativity and a very cooperative sausage dog.
For Halloween 2026, we’re bringing back a few of Django’s favorite looks and adding some fresh inspiration, including a country music legend, a very fashionable baked potato, and a four-legged Amazon delivery.
Whether you have a tiny Chihuahua, a fluffy Golden Retriever, a French Bulldog, or a long-bodied dachshund, these 10 easy DIY dog Halloween costumes can be adapted to fit your pup. Most require just a few inexpensive materials, and several can be made without sewing.
Let’s get creative!
Our Favorite DIY Dog Costume Ideas for 2026
Short on time? The Beanie Baby, pumpkin, and ghost are especially easy to make. For something a little more unexpected, try Dolly Paw-ton, the baked potato, or an Amazon delivery dog.
Our only rule: Your dog’s comfort always comes first. A simple costume that your pup happily wears is much better than an elaborate one they can’t wait to escape.
1. Boo! The Classic Ghost Dog Costume
Sometimes the simplest Halloween costumes are the best. A little white fabric, a few minutes of creativity, and suddenly your sweet, innocent pup is the spookiest ghost on the block.
This was one of our favorite Halloween looks with Django. And yes, we still laugh every time we see the photo.
What You’ll Need
- Lightweight white fabric, an old pillowcase, or a small white sheet
- Scissors
- Black felt or a fabric marker
- Optional: Soft hook-and-loop fasteners
How to Make It
- Measure your dog from the shoulders to the base of the tail, then cut a lightweight piece of white fabric that can drape comfortably over their back.
- Trim the bottom into an uneven, wavy shape to create a classic ghost silhouette.
- Cut two oval eyes and a small spooky mouth from black felt. Attach them to the fabric so the ghost face sits on your dog’s back, not over their actual face.
- Secure the fabric lightly to a comfortable, well-fitting harness using soft hook-and-loop tabs. Make sure it cannot slide forward over your dog’s head or interfere with their legs.
- Snap a photo of your adorable little ghost!
DJANGO tip: The original sheet-over-the-head look is hilarious for a quick, carefully supervised photo, but we recommend the open-face ghost cape for a more comfortable costume. Your dog’s eyes, nose, and mouth should remain completely unobstructed.
2. The Beanie Baby Dog Costume
Remember Beanie Babies? Those little stuffed animals with the famous red heart-shaped tags?
Turns out your dog makes a pretty incredible life-size version. All you need is a homemade tag, and you’ve got an adorable throwback costume in minutes.
We tried this with Django years ago, and it’s still one of our favorites. Perhaps because he genuinely looks like a collectible stuffed animal.
What You’ll Need
- Red cardstock or lightweight cardboard
- White paper or a white paint marker
- Scissors and glue
- A small piece of ribbon or hook-and-loop tape
- Your dog’s regular harness
How to Make It
- Cut a large heart shape from red cardstock, similar to the famous Beanie Baby tag.
- Write or glue the familiar white lowercase “ty” letters onto the front.
- On the back, add your dog’s name and a funny description. For example: “Django. Rare. Extremely cuddly. Loves snacks.”
- Use ribbon or hook-and-loop tape to attach the heart securely to the side of your dog’s harness, where it won’t swing into their face or interfere with walking.
- Congratulations! You now own the world’s cutest Beanie Baby.
Make it personal: Include your dog’s birthday or adoption day on the back of the tag, just like the original collectible toys. Keep the tag lightweight and remove it if your dog tries to chew it.
3. Dolly Paw-ton: A Tribute to a Country Music Legend
Big personality. A little sparkle. A whole lot of heart.
We can’t think of a more fabulous Halloween tribute than dressing your pup as Dolly Parton, the legendary singer, songwriter, actress, and philanthropist beloved for her incredible music, larger-than-life style, and generosity.
Dolly-inspired costumes are also enjoying renewed attention in 2026, making this a wonderfully timely choice for Halloween.
And the best part? Your dog doesn’t need an elaborate wig or a custom-made outfit. A few playful country-inspired accessories can capture the spirit of Dolly beautifully.
What You’ll Need
- A pink, white, or sparkly dog shirt or vest
- A lightweight western-style bandana
- Fabric stars, rhinestone-style decorations, or metallic felt
- Optional: A small lightweight cowboy hat for a quick photo
- Optional: A cardboard guitar as a photo prop
How to Make It
- Start with a comfortable pink or white dog shirt. A denim-look vest also works beautifully.
- Add a few fabric stars or sparkly decorations to the back of the outfit. Secure them firmly with fabric glue while the shirt is off your dog, allowing the glue to dry completely before dressing them.
- Fold a western-style bandana and attach it loosely and securely to the outfit or harness. Keep it away from the throat and face.
- For a fun photo, place a little cardboard guitar beside your pup. A lightweight cowboy hat is optional if your dog doesn’t mind wearing one briefly.
- Put on your favorite Dolly song and let your four-legged country star shine!
Make it a duo: Dress yourself as a country singer, too! Matching western outfits make a fun dog-and-owner Halloween costume without requiring much extra effort.
4. The Baked Potato Dog Costume
Some dogs are elegant. Some are adventurous. And some are clearly meant to dress up as a baked potato.
This delightfully ridiculous costume is one of the more unexpected pet costume trends of 2026, and we absolutely understand the appeal.
A soft brown shirt becomes a baked potato with a few felt toppings. It’s easy, inexpensive, and particularly funny if your dog already has a rather potato-shaped body.

What You’ll Need
- A soft brown or tan dog shirt
- White or cream-colored felt for sour cream
- Green felt for chives
- Optional: Yellow felt for butter
- Optional: Soft silver fabric for a foil-inspired accent
- Fabric glue or a needle and thread
How to Make It
- Lay your dog’s brown shirt flat on a table.
- Cut a few wavy, rounded shapes from white felt to resemble a generous dollop of sour cream.
- Cut small green felt pieces for chives and a yellow square for butter.
- Arrange the toppings across the back of the shirt and attach them securely with fabric glue or stitching.
- For an extra baked-potato effect, add soft silver fabric around part of the shirt’s outer edge to resemble foil. Keep it lightweight and flexible.
- Once everything is completely dry and secure, dress your pup and prepare for some very funny photos.
Keep it comfy: Use soft fabric rather than actual aluminum foil, which can have sharp edges, make noise, and become a chewing hazard. The costume should feel like a regular dog shirt with lightweight decorations.
5. The Very Hungry Centipede Dog Costume
One dog. A whole lot of legs.
According to Google’s 2026 Halloween Frightgeist trends, the centipede is one of the standout pet costume ideas of the year.
And it’s surprisingly easy to recreate at home!
The idea is simple: Start with a fitted dog shirt and add a row of little fabric legs along each side. When your pup walks, the extra legs create a hilariously creepy-crawly effect.
Long-bodied dogs like dachshunds have a natural advantage here, but the design can be adapted for short, tall, fluffy, and large breeds, too.

What You’ll Need
- A comfortable brown, black, or dark green dog shirt
- Craft felt in a contrasting color
- Scissors
- Fabric glue or a needle and thread
How to Make It
- Start with a dog shirt that fits comfortably across the chest and back.
- Cut several short, rounded leg shapes from craft felt. Make them proportional to your dog’s body, with smaller pieces for petite dogs and slightly larger ones for big pups.
- Lay the shirt flat and arrange the felt legs in two rows, one along each side of the body.
- Attach the legs securely, positioning them above your dog’s natural leg movement so they cannot drag on the ground, tangle, or interfere with walking.
- Let the adhesive dry completely, dress your dog, and admire your newly transformed little creature.
For dachshund parents: This one is especially funny on a long-backed sausage dog. Just remember that the costume should remain lightweight, flexible, and easy to remove. Your pup needs to walk normally without anything pulling across the back.
Halloween Style, the DJANGO Way
Not Every Pup Needs a Full Costume to Get Festive!
Some dogs love dressing up. Others would much rather skip the extra layers, hats, and accessories. And that’s perfectly fine with us.
A colorful harness, fun sweater, or playful accessory can be just as festive as a full Halloween costume.
Mix and match bold orange, purple, green, and black dog gear for a Halloween-inspired look that feels fun, stylish, and completely wearable beyond October 31.
Whether you’re heading out trick-or-treating, visiting a dog-friendly pumpkin patch, or simply enjoying a fall walk together, a little color goes a long way.
6. The Diet Coke Can Dog Costume
For the dog who runs on treats, belly rubs, and a little bit of caffeine-fueled chaos. (The caffeine is for you, of course.)
Believe it or not, Diet Coke is among Google’s trending pet costume ideas for Halloween 2026. And turning your pup into a miniature soda can is surprisingly straightforward.
With a gray shirt and a few red decorations, you can create a funny, recognizable costume without much effort.
What You’ll Need
- A silver or light gray dog shirt
- Red and black fabric markers or felt
- White fabric paint or paper for lettering
- Fabric glue, if using felt
How to Make It
- Lay the gray dog shirt flat with the back facing up.
- Use red fabric paint or felt lettering to recreate the familiar Diet Coke-inspired look. A playful “Diet Pup” version works beautifully, too.
- Add a thin black or red stripe along one side to suggest the design of a soda can.
- Allow any paint or glue to dry completely before dressing your dog.
- Snap a photo of your little soda pup beside your favorite drink!
Keep it simple: There’s no need to make a rigid cylindrical costume. A comfortable gray shirt with bold lettering makes the idea easy to recognize and much more pleasant for your dog to wear. And remember, caffeinated drinks are for humans, not pups!
7. The Amazon Delivery Dog: Special Delivery!
We all know the excitement of seeing an Amazon delivery waiting at the front door.
But what if the box contained something even better than whatever you ordered?
Meet the cutest delivery of all: your dog.
This funny DIY costume uses a simple cardboard shipping box as a photo prop. It’s perfect for an adorable Halloween picture, especially if your pup already enjoys investigating empty boxes.

What You’ll Need
- An empty, clean Amazon shipping box or plain cardboard box
- Scissors or a utility knife for adult use
- A thick black marker
- Optional: Paper and tape to make a delivery label
How to Make It
- Choose a cardboard box large enough that your dog can comfortably stand beside or partially within it without being squeezed or restricted.
- Remove all packing materials, shipping labels with personal information, loose tape, and staples.
- Cut away the bottom and create a large opening on one side so your dog can easily enter and exit. Smooth or cover any rough cardboard edges.
- Decorate the outside with a handwritten shipping label. We love “SPECIAL DELIVERY: ONE VERY GOOD DOG” or “PRIME PUP DELIVERY.”
- Place the box on the floor, and invite your dog to stand behind it or peek through the open front. Use a treat or favorite toy to get their attention for a quick photo.
Important: This is a supervised photo prop, not a wearable walking costume or pet carrier. Keep the box open and easy to exit, and never close your dog inside. Some dogs will be happier standing next to the box, which makes an equally adorable photo!
8. The Hot Dog Costume: Extra Mustard, Please!
A dog dressed as a hot dog. It’s a classic for a reason.
As dachshund parents, we have an especially soft spot for this costume. But you definitely don’t need a sausage dog to pull it off. French Bulldogs, Corgis, Pugs, Labradors, and just about every other breed can make an excellent hot dog.
The DIY version is easy: Create a soft fabric bun, add a squiggle of mustard, and you’ve got yourself a very handsome little snack.

What You’ll Need
- A brown or tan dog shirt
- Two pieces of soft tan felt or fleece for the bun
- Yellow felt for mustard
- Optional: Red felt for ketchup
- Fabric glue or needle and thread
How to Make It
- Lay your dog’s shirt flat and measure the length of the back.
- Cut two long, softly rounded tan fabric pieces to resemble hot dog buns. Make them proportionate to your dog’s body.
- Attach the bun pieces along either side of the shirt’s back, leaving the center visible.
- Cut a wavy strip of yellow felt to look like mustard and secure it down the center. Add a red strip for ketchup if you’re feeling fancy.
- Let everything dry, then dress your pup and admire your masterpiece.
DJANGO tip: Keep the bun pieces flat, soft, and lightweight rather than heavily stuffed. The goal is to make your pup look like a hot dog, not feel trapped inside one.
9. The Little Pumpkin Dog Costume
Nothing says Halloween quite like a jack-o’-lantern. And nothing makes a jack-o’-lantern cuter than putting one on your dog.
This is one of our favorite easy homemade dog costumes because it’s inexpensive, works for almost every breed, and doesn’t require a trip to a specialty costume store.
All you really need is an orange dog shirt and a little creativity.
What You’ll Need
- An orange dog shirt or lightweight sweater
- Black felt or fabric paint
- Scissors
- Fabric glue
- Optional: Green felt for a small decorative stem
How to Make It
- Lay your orange dog shirt flat with the back facing up.
- Cut two triangular eyes and a big, happy jack-o’-lantern smile from black felt.
- Arrange the face on the shirt and attach it with fabric glue. Alternatively, use black fabric paint to draw the design directly onto the fabric.
- For an extra festive touch, add a small flat green felt stem near the upper back.
- Allow everything to dry completely before dressing your pup.
Make it a family costume: Dress everyone in orange and head out as a whole pumpkin patch! This is especially cute for families with kids who want to coordinate with their dog.
10. The Little Bat Dog Costume
Looking for something a little spooky without dressing your dog from head to toe?
A pair of lightweight bat wings is a fantastic option. The costume is simple, instantly recognizable, and works beautifully on almost any dog.
We especially love this look on black, gray, and dark brown dogs, although a fluffy white bat is pretty wonderful, too.

What You’ll Need
- Black craft felt or lightweight black fleece
- Scissors
- Soft hook-and-loop tape
- Your dog’s regular, well-fitting harness
- Optional: A piece of soft fabric to reinforce the wings
How to Make It
- Draw two bat wing shapes on black felt. Keep them proportionate to your dog’s body.
- Cut out the wings, creating three or four gentle scallops along the bottom edge of each.
- Attach the two wings to a small, lightweight felt base that sits across the upper back.
- Use soft hook-and-loop tape to secure the base to your dog’s harness without covering the leash attachment, buckles, or adjustment points.
- Try the wings on your dog and check that they do not interfere with the shoulders, legs, or normal walking.
- Snap a few spooky photos of your adorable little bat!
Keep the wings small: Oversized wings might look dramatic in photos, but they can snag on things or make your dog uncomfortable. Short, flexible wings are usually the better choice, particularly for active pups.
Dog Halloween Costume Safety: A Few Things to Remember
We love a funny Halloween costume as much as anyone, but your dog’s comfort and safety should always come first.
Before heading out in your homemade masterpiece, keep these tips in mind:
- Make sure your dog can move freely. Costumes should never restrict walking, sitting, lying down, or normal tail and leg movement.
- Keep your dog’s face clear. Avoid accessories that block their eyes, nose, mouth, ears, or ability to pant and breathe normally.
- Watch for loose pieces. Buttons, beads, sequins, dangling strings, and poorly attached decorations can become chewing or choking hazards.
- Choose lightweight, breathable materials. Avoid heavy layers or costumes that could cause your dog to overheat, especially indoors or during warmer Halloween weather.
- Supervise costume time. Never leave your dog unattended while wearing a costume or posing with props. Remove the costume immediately if your pup seems stressed, uncomfortable, or tries repeatedly to get out of it.
And remember: Not every dog enjoys dressing up. If your pup would rather celebrate Halloween in their regular harness or a comfortable sweater, that’s a perfectly wonderful choice.
DIY Dog Halloween Costume FAQs
What is the easiest DIY Halloween costume for a dog? +
A Beanie Baby costume is one of the easiest options. Simply make a red heart-shaped tag from cardstock, add the familiar white lettering, and securely attach it to your dog’s harness. A pumpkin costume made from an orange shirt and black felt is another excellent last-minute option. Both are inexpensive, require minimal materials, and can be made without sewing.
How can I make a dog Halloween costume without sewing? +
Start with a comfortable dog shirt, sweater, or harness and add lightweight decorations using fabric glue, fabric paint, or hook-and-loop tape. Felt is especially useful because it is inexpensive, easy to cut, and generally doesn’t fray. Always assemble the costume while your dog is not wearing it, allow adhesives to dry completely, and make sure all decorations are securely attached before use.
What are some funny dog Halloween costume ideas for 2026? +
A baked potato, centipede, Diet Coke can, Amazon delivery dog, and Dolly Paw-ton are some of our favorite funny DIY dog costumes for Halloween 2026. What can my dog wear for Halloween if they don’t like costumes? +

A comfortable orange, purple, green, or black harness, a festive sweater, or a colorful leash and accessory can create a fun Halloween look without extra costume pieces. Choose familiar gear your dog already enjoys wearing and keep their normal movement unrestricted.
