I wore one of my Santa coats for this week’s therapy cat visit at the children’s hospital. Of course the lobby was all decked out with decorations. And even though I tend to just walk through without noticing anything, I couldn’t help but pause by the big lit up snowmen.
Both the boys I visited in the lobby had wrist braces. That seemed to be the theme for the whole visit. Lots of the kids I saw had limbs that needed healing.
The first boy was cute and kind of shy about petting me — although he did. But his mom chatted happily while she filled out a form. Because they had a couple of cats at home, they were quite surprised when I rang a bell for them! Like most cats, theirs don’t do tricks.
I showed off my paw shake with the other boy. He and his mom were both delighted, but we couldn’t converse with them much because they didn’t speak a lot of English.
I had a couple of special visits in the Exam rooms. Two of the children I saw had never touched a cat before! The first boy was older, maybe 11 or so. He was very tentative about touching me, even though my human showed him how. He awkwardly gave me chin skritches, but he got better at it by the end of the visit.
The other kid who had never petted a cat before was a toddler. He was mostly very good about petting me, and when he started to get too excited, he didn’t get rough. So neither my human nor his dad had to intervene other than his dad saying be gentle.
We also visited a couple of girls in the cast rooms. They both really enjoyed seeing me. And coincidentally their moms both asked my human a lot about my visits and how I became a therapy cat. My human always likes talking about it, so that made her happy!
I had such a nice visit. We actually scheduled it at the last moment because we had some extra time this week. Because during the holidays, everyone needs a little therapy cat magic.
