Here at the Arizona Humane Society (AHS), our vet techs are not just the backbone of our veterinary services for both owned and shelter pets; they are compassionate caregivers, skilled practitioners and passionate advocates for the animals we serve.
We invite you to join us honoring these frontline soldiers throughout this special week by showing your endless appreciation for the incredible work vet techs do each day!
AHS Vet Techs Wear Many Hats
Veterinary technicians fulfill several roles and responsibilities here at AHS, and their contributions are essential to our comprehensive System of Care.
- Clinical Care Providers: Our vet techs are trained to assist veterinarians in diagnosing and treating animals throughout our shelter medicine department, including in our Bottle Baby ICU and Parvo ICU. This includes taking vital signs, performing lab tests and administering medications. Their keen observation skills ensure that any changes in an animal’s health are addressed swiftly and with lots of love and care.
- Surgical Assistants: In the trauma hospital, our vet techs are invaluable. They prepare animals for surgery, monitor anesthesia and assist veterinarians during procedures ranging from spay/neuter alterations to orthopedic operations. Their expertise ensures that surgeries run smoothly and safely, providing the best outcomes for our furry patients.
- Foster Department Supporters: Our foster vet techs are dedicated to ensuring the wellbeing of pets receiving temporary care from loving Foster Heroes. These specialized vet techs keep track of medication regimens, conduct regular health assessments, offer expert guidance to foster families and work closely with veterinarians to address any health concerns.
- Educators and Advocates: AHS vet techs also play a crucial role in educating pet owners about responsible pet care and nutrition. They communicate treatment plans, explain medications and provide guidance on behavioral issues, helping pet owners make informed decisions for their beloved companions.
- Compassionate Comforters: Beyond technical skills, our vet techs provide emotional support to both animals and their owners. They spend significant time with the animals we care for, offering comfort during difficult situations and ensuring that pets and their people feel safe and loved when it matters most.
