My therapy cat visit to my assisted living pals happened to be on Veterans Day. So it was a little different from usual.
It started off normally, since the first resident I saw was the woman who likes my high fives. But I’d barely finished with her and the woman sitting next to her when a couple of staff members appeared. They were holding their tablet, little flags and tiny patriotic hats.
I just started visiting with my nonverbal friend with the heavy hands when they put one of the little hats on her and handed her a flag for a photo session. It was actually pretty cute! But then they pulled me and my human away to pose with other residents.
The fun part was getting to visit with a lot of residents I don’t always get to see because they’re sleeping. My human almost never disturbs them because she doesn’t know them. But the staff knew which ones would most likely want to see me and pose for them. The part that wasn’t as much fun was that I didn’t get to spend as much time with some of my regulars as I would have liked.
I did get to see the man who likes me but who doesn’t remember me anymore, and the red-haired, cat loving lady. When I was posing with one of the residents I didn’t know well, they kept trying to get her to smile but she was busy softly singing, “God Bless America.”
In case you are wondering, yes the tiny hats were the right size for me to wear! So I did get to put one on for a couple of the photos.
When the staff covered everybody that would pose for photos, my human and I returned to the nonverbal lady. You can’t interact with her like the other residents, who are chatty even if sometimes they don’t make much sense. But there is something otherworldly about her. And in some ways it’s actually easier for me and my human to spend a few minutes with her. When my human returned with me, she gave us a smile that if you blinked, you would have missed it.
