This February, in honor of National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month, we spoke with Rosa Arevalo, a veterinary technician in our Sunnyslope Campus’ Marge Wright Veterinary Clinic, about why offering affordable veterinary care is so important to our mission.
For people who may not know what goes on in our Margaret McCallister Brock Veterinary Clinic, can you describe what you and your teammates do?
We are a public, community clinic, so people bring their pets in to get spayed or neutered. We are super important for this community in particular because there are so many owners that can’t afford care. Owners come to us because they know that we’re low-cost and we’re able to provide some assistance when they need it.
Why is offering affordable, accessible veterinary care to owned pets in the community so important to animal welfare in Arizona?
There are not a lot of places that can provide assistance like we can, especially here in Sunnyslope. It’s really important to be able to offer that to the community because a lot of the people that do come in are low-income, they have no money or they can’t afford any type of veterinary care. Giving that care to the people who need it is so rewarding.
What is your favorite part about being a Margaret McCallister Brock Veterinary Clinic team member?
Honestly, just being able to help everybody, seeing the smiles on people’s faces when we’re able to give them what they need or help them however they need. It just really warms my heart. It’s an immediate reward, and it’s that hit of dopamine that gets you through the day.
