For decades, the similar-sounding Arizona Humane Society (AHS) and Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) confused our community. People often assume that any animal welfare organization with “humane society” in its name is part of a national network. The truth is, we are all independent organizations with our own missions, priorities and funding.
That’s why we’re celebrating HSUS’s recent name change to Humane World for Animals as a step toward clearing up the confusion for donors, supporters and animal lovers here in our home state of Arizona.
National Organizations Harm Arizona Pets
While many humane societies share a commitment to fighting for animals, our day-to-day work differs greatly. The Arizona Humane Society provides hands-on care for sick, injured and abused animals across three campus locations right here in our community. We’re also on the ground during national disasters in our state, advocate for municipal and statewide legislative change and assist local pet owners directly through our Pet Resource Center.
We know and serve our community far better than national organizations like HSUS. Many animal lovers are shocked to discover that HSUS doesn’t run a single animal shelter anywhere in the country, and only a small fraction of the funds they raise actually reach local animal welfare efforts. In 2023, they gave under one percent of their revenue to pets in Arizona.
Your Support of AHS Helps Arizona Pets
AHS is the largest privately funded shelter system in the country. We are not affiliated with and receive zero funding from HSUS. We depend solely on the generosity of donors right here in our community.
HSUS’s approach to marketing and soliciting funds consistently diverted support away from local animal welfare efforts over the years. Kind-hearted individuals, believing their contributions would go to their local shelter, often misdirected donations intended for us to HSUS due to confusion surrounding the names. This lack of clarity makes it challenging for organizations like ours to secure the funding we need to care for sick, injured and abused pets in our community.
A Win for Local Pets and People
HSUS’ name change is a victory for the Valley’s most vulnerable pets. It clears up confusion, ensures donations go to the causes supporters care most about and strengthens our ability to help the animals who need us the most right here in our community.
